Interview
Michael Green
By Elizabeth Sinclair
Michael Green is a true internet marketer. He is honest and
sincere. It is my pleasure to introduce you to him.
1. Please tell us about yourself.
My name is Michael Green, I'm 34 years old and married. I
live in London, England.
2. How would you descibe your personality?
Fairly extravert and very ambitious. Aware that life can be
short and that there's always a pressing need to get things
done today, not tomorrow.
3. How did you become interested in the internet and when
did you first "go online"?
Facinated from the second I heard about the web back in
1993/4. Prior to that I was always somewhat interested in
computers and even ran my own software company whilst at
school (as a 14 or 15 year old).
4. What businesses/websites do you currently operate on the
internet?

http://www.EasyEzineToolkit.com
http://www.HowToFindHappiness.com
http://www.howtoPresent.com
http://www.howtoPDFcreator.com
http://www.CreateAndSELLproductsONLINE.com

5. What inspired you or made you decide to start your
current online business/website?
One day I bought an online product for my conventional
offline printing business.
Wow! I thought. I just paid for something over the net,
which was delivered to me instantly right there and then
and it wasn't even cheap to buy.
What was the product? Just some information! But the point
was if I'd just spent cash in that way, then surely others
would do the same.
That got me thinking that there must be a market for well
written, perfectly targeted online products and I
immediately thought of using my knowledge of creating
newsletters (from my printing business) to good use. To
make things even better, I had over 10 years of pre-written
copyright free articles that I'd been building up for my
print business. So the beginnings of the idea for
http://www.howtoWRITEaNEWSLETTER.com
was right there and I got to work on it that very same
evening.
I remember making a call to my wife from my cellphone on the
way home from work that day. "Honey", I said, "I'm going to
create some information products and sell them on the net".
My wife was supportive, but skeptical I think: "That's nice
dear, what time will you be home for tea".
6. What is one of the biggest mistakes and/or blunders you
have made while marketing online, and what did you learn
from it?
My first two products were VERY successful and that led me
into a false sense of knowing precisely what the market
place wanted every time.
The danger here is that this prevents you properly market
testing your ideas. So when it came to my third product
called
http://www.howtoPresent.com
I went right ahead and put a lot of time into creating what
was technically my best written, most thought out, product
to date.
But...to my horror when I released it, initially it failed
to sell well at all.
My problem was that I hadn't properly researched my market.
Instead I thought I could second guess what people would
want. The truth is that even very experienced marketers
should properly test their products through market research,
rather than just going on a hunch.
All I eventually needed to do was to test the way I was
marketing the product, by which I mean the sales letter and
once I'd tweaked my sales approach, the product itself
started to move. It's been a steady seller ever since, with
virtually no refunds. But I was lucky because it could have
equally turned out that the actual product needed changing,
rather than just the marketing and that would have cost me
a lot of time to achieve.
The lesson?
Always market test everything you do, before putting in a
ton of time.
7. What percent of your income is made from online sales?
100% of my How To Corp income is online.
8. What are your most successful means of advertising?
PayPerClick is very successful for me and drives continuous
traffic my way. People get into trouble with PayPerClick if
they haven't properly tested their product and don't know
what kind of success ratio they're able to get in terms of
visits to sales.
So I *never* spend money on large scale PayPerClick until
I'm fully comfortable with my product's performance at
converting visitors to sales.
Next I would say that writing articles and sending them out
to Ezines is a very successful form of advertising. It's
enjoyable to do and Ezine Editors are surprisingly hungry
for good quality articles. You get to provide your resource
box with information at the bottom of your article and this
generates sales afterwards.
9. Do you have any advertising tips or secrets you would
like to share with our readers?
When I do carry out Ezine advertising I only book solos. I
can always be certain of making my money back, but the
drawback is that you must keep a close eye out to ensure
that all the Ezines have actually published your ad. It's
rather easy for some of them to....well...forget!
I always book my solos through a reliable co-op like
http://www.howtocorp.com/sdtsolo
and they ensure that my ad gets placed in all the Ezines in
the group or groups I select.
10. What do you like most about being online?
Freedom to operate from anywhere in the world + the buzz of
knowing that they'll be new sales in my email inbox every
night.
11. What are your goals for 2003?
Create more great online toolkit products.
12. What advice would you give to someone trying to start
their own online business?
That's easy....I've written it all down in this article
