I have finally decided that my new career is going to be to
become a weather person (preferably on television). This is
the only career that I know of where you get paid lots of
money, you get to be on television, and no one seems to care
if your weather forcast is right or wrong. This week has been
incredible. They say it will be partly sunny and close to 70
degrees, and instead it rains and the temperature is closer
to 50. The other day when I was driving to work, I was
listening to the radio and they were predicting a chance of
some scattered rain showers. Guess what? It was pouring down
rain!!! All they had to do was look out their window!! It sure
sounds like an ideal job to me.

Interview
Jan Tallent-Dandridge
By Elizabeth Sinclair
1. Please tell us about yourself.
Jan Tallent-Dandridge, 48, married with 3 children,
1 grown up and gone- 21, two at home, 15 and 10. We
live in a tiny town in Mid-MO about 100 miles from
St. Louis in an old, rambling, 8 room, 80+ year old
farmhouse.
2. How would you descibe your personality?
Believe it or not, I am very shy in person, do not do
much better on the phone but really come alive on the
net. I pride myself on my continuous good name and
credibilty and try to stay totally REAL and girl-next-door.
I am a friendly, usually nice person with a sarcastic,
though hopefully harmless, sense of humor.
3. How did you become interested in the internet and
when did you first "go online"?
Four years ago I was laid off from my telemarketing
job and went on the net to try to promote my "brick
and mortar" business, the Tallent Agency, where I was
making business cards, resumes, address labels etc. I
accidentally stumbled upon a *safe list* looking for
targeted people to tell about my business and the rest
is history.
4. What businesses/websites do you currently operate on
the internet?
I have an ezine, Rim digest, with over 49,000 subscribers
and for which I just celebrated my third year anniversary
of doing. It is at
http://www.rimdigest.com
I still have my home based DTP, Tallent Agency, at
http://www.tallentagency.com
and a digital superstore, AAA Free & Affordable Software,
etc. at
http://www.softwarewarrioress.com
I have a newbies discussion group and forum at
http://www.newbies911.com/newbies911.htm
and my main site is a mirror for my opportunities and
affiliate programs for my nickname, the Marketing
Warrioress- one is at
http://www.jantd.com
and it is a mirror of
http://www.marketingwarrioress.com
Lastly I have a health products and services site at
http://www.jtdhealth.com
I am rather busy both on and off the net.
5. What inspired you or made you decide to start your
current online business/website?
My very first site for my bizopps and affiliate programs
had its domain name taken over by a porn site so I
registered marketingwarrioress.com to replace it. Each
other site just happened as I grew and my tastes and
interests changed or grew, too.
6. What is one of the biggest mistakes and/or blunders
you have made while marketing online, and what did you
learn from it?
As a brand newborn newbie at marketing, I fell for one
of those scams where you buy a cd with "a million eager
readers who want to read your advertising"! It turned
out, of course, to be harvested and made up addies and
I almost got shut down for *spamming* before I even knew
what that was! I learned, and it has been a steady lesson,
if it sounds too good to be true, it probably IS and
after seeing my OWN address on "targeted" leads I have
purchased, chances are MOST, though of course, not ALL,
of these programs and products will be bogus and can get
you in serious trouble.
7. What percent of your income is made from online sales?
95% of my entire income is made from my various web sites.
Only my DTP and Health Products & Services are marketed
offline as well as online.
8. What are your most successful means of advertising?
My most successful ads are ones I run in my own ezine and
usually as a recommendation to my subscribers. I also use
advertising services that I am an affiliate for, here are
two of my favorites:
Ezine King, Submit a 35 word advert to 1.2 million true
opt-in subscribers for the lowest prices on the internet!
http://tinyurl.com/485i
Use the Directory of Ezines. Save time. Make money.
Easy to use. fr** ads too! Start selling today!
http://tinyurl.com/3nhq
9. Do you have any advertising tips or secrets you would
like to share with our readers?
Yes, actually, as I tell some of my own advertisers, less
is usually more, meaning pick a good, compelling subject
or top line and then be brief and to the point, no hype
or bull, just state the facts and it not only works for
MY advertising but for my customers.
10. What do you like most about being online?
The support and networking of other publishers and
marketers is amazing. Nowhere in the *real world*
could you find your competitors so eager to help and
give you kudos.
11. What are your goals for 2003?
I already know my ezine is one of the best marketing
and small ezines on the net. My goal is to have 50,000
READERS, not just subscribers, and to be THE BEST by
12/31/03!
12. What advice would you give to someone trying to start
their own online business?
Believe in yourself and do not give up!
thanks, Elizabeth!
Jan :-)
