Interview With Jack Humphrey, Internet Marketing Consultant
By Elizabeth Sinclair
1. Please tell us about yourself.
Jack Humphrey, Age 35, single, Richmond, Indiana
2. How would you describe your personality?
Jovial. I make light of any situation I can, especially if
people are taking themselves or others a bit too seriously. I
tend to love to play more than work, so sometimes it’s hard to
focus on work, which makes being my own boss both a good and a
bad thing!
3. How did you become interested in the internet and when did
you first "go online"?
Long, long ago. Basically I have been online since the birth
of the web, although professionally for a much shorter time. I
was in College when things really started getting interesting
online with browsers, etc.
4. What businesses/websites do you currently operate on the
internet?
Everything I have online runs under Tale Chaser Publishing.
My first big success was a bit over a year ago with
http://webmastertraffictools.com
It has since become quite a large site and responsible for
a lot of sales of mine and affiliate products.
I also run http://Ebook-Printing.com which services ebook
authors who want to get into print and offer their books
as offline companions to their ebook versions. Usually this
expansion brings higher profits for authors and more sales
due to the appeal that printed work has to most people.
http://Power-Linking-Profits.com is my ebook site. I am
getting ready to announce Power Linking 2 in the coming
weeks, which will be a big seller if 1 was any indication.
http://DogCook.com was inspired by my two Golden Retrievers,
Joe and Tyler. I created that book totally out of content
that was available online and with friends who are a little
more than slightly attached to their dogs. You can see me,
Joe and Tyler at http://JackHumphrey.com
5. What inspired you or made you decide to start your current
online business/website?
I got tired of watching others making a killing online, tired
of working for others, tired of not calling my own shots, and
I felt I had something to contribute to the online marketing
world. I felt it had gotten a bit cheeky and had started down
the slippery slope of cheap, huckster, scammy type marketing.
I wanted to show people that at least, if they dealt with me,
they would feel like they were finally talking with a real
person who wasn’t afraid to tell them my product wasn’t for
them as well as what really works and what doesn’t. I don’t
worry about ruffling feathers and burning bridges. Each time I
have in the past, at least one person has complimented and
thanked me for it; for being honest and for looking out for my
subscribers and clients.
6. What is one of the biggest mistakes and/or blunders you
have made while marketing online, and what did you learn from
it?
Not signing a contract with a partner I once had. I felt like
there was no way this guy would ever turn into a problem, felt
like they were a friend to me, all the same old stuff everyone
says after getting burned.
All resulted in a long bad breakup that was totally
unnecessary and draining both financially and emotionally.
If you go into joint ventures and full blown partnerships with
others take the time to get a contract (and a good one)
drafted and signed by both parties every single time!
7. What percent of your income is made from online sales?
100%
8. What are your most successful means of advertising?
Joint ventures. I do a lot of business with JV partners above
and beyond anything else. This is something you have to
develop over time. Relationships with online business people
in your niche are the #1 developmental tools to use for your
business in a large percentage of cases.
I build my list and advertise through it. I Power Link my
websites and get tons of traffic, so I guess you could say a
combo of reciprocal links and search engine traffic.
I buy leads from http://LeadFactory.com quite often and
belong to http://Listfire.com and http://Listfire.comhttp://Opportunity.com
Also I have had some incredible success with Push Button
Leads in the last two weeks with about 230 subscribers.
I really have never gotten a hold of a great ezine to
advertise in. Just not into it after several less than
profitable forays into that type of marketing.
I also have a mini-network of specialty sites that, together,
help WebTT get ranked and linked in the search engines. You
can see the whole set of links at the bottom of
webmastertraffictools.com’s index page.
9. Do you have any advertising tips or secrets you would like
to share with our readers?
Build your list and build your relationships with other
marketers in your niche.
Seriously, when you see Joe Guru talking about the biggest
secret ever, and he doesn’t say anything about JVs and big
lists, he is lying to you. The big boys almost exclusively
exploit their own lists and their friends’ lists.
And the bigger you get, the less you use the Marketing 101
tactics that they usually have in their ebooks.
Work hard now, get your name out there with articles,
reciprocal linking, forums, etc. and play by the rules, and
eventually you will be able to launch a product just by
letting your inner circle of partners know about it and
mailing your own list.
I hate to burst bubbles, except when it helps people starting
out, even if you really want to believe desperately there are
really big things you can do now like the big dogs.
The steps you take now, if you are just starting out, is the
hardest work you will ever do online until you have built up a
critical mass of traffic, relationships, and a big fat list.
After that it gets SO much easier. I promise!
10. What do you like most about being online?
Freedom. Control. And the unlimited potential to profit and
do great things online that it would take a lifetime to do
offline.
11. What are your goals for 2003?
I would like to sell 3000 copies of Power Linking 2. I also
have a guy in Australia that I am working with to bring him
into the American market. He is really well known in Australia
and other countries, but has yet to tap the states
significantly. He has a big list of books that he has
converted to PDF and he wants to bring in ½ million in profits
before year end, which means a great payday for me as well.
12. What advice would you give to someone trying to start
their own online business?
Be realistic and scientific. Set goals but know what goals to
set. Don’t think you are going to make enough money to quit
whatever you do now for money right away. And don’t quit your
job until you have more coming in from your online business
than you net from your job.
Learn what it means to be self employed and talk to a
tax/financial advisor. Know that you are in it for the long
haul and be ready to put in some seriously crazy hours in the
beginning.
You MIGHT get onto something that turns a profit right away,
but don’t count on it and don’t be discouraged if it takes
longer than you had hoped.
It is NEVER as easy as some people advertise. It is work,
real live honest work, to get to my level of success. And I
consider myself on the lower rungs of the ladder of success.
Have patience, persistence, and if you really believe in
yourself and never give up, even after the 23rd failure or set
back, you will succeed.
Remember also that a huge percentage of those who fail online
are not failed by others, they are failed by themselves. If
you take responsibility for your successes and failures, you
will go much further, much faster, than people who try to
blame systems, products, and bad advice for their own failure.
