I can't believe it is already August 1. Where did the
summer go? I am desperately trying to lay out in the sun
any spare moment I have because I know that pretty soon
winter will be approaching and I will have the "winter pale"
look again.
Even though we probably don't want to be thinking about the
holidays, sales always increase during the winter months.
So if you haven't started already, now would be a great time
to get your website up to date, join a new affiliate program,
start thinking of holiday specials you can have and just get
prepared for the shopping season online. Even though sales
in stores have been down, internet sales remain very strong.
If you come up with any great holiday or winter promotion
ideas and you would like to share them with us, please send
your idea to me at mailto:adexposure@att.net with "idea" in
the subject line. If it is a good idea, I will run it in
Advertising Exposure News with your first name and website
address. (See....I'm offering you a chance to promote your
website for free!)

Interview
Interview With Lori Osterberg
By Elizabeth Sinclair
1. Please tell us about yourself.
My name is Lori Osterberg. I am one of a few Colorado
natives, born and raised in the Denver area. Currently I live
in Englewood with my husband of 16 years, Andrew, and we have
an 8-year-old daughter Fallon who keeps me very active. I am 38
years young, and getting ready to attend my 20th class reunion
in August. The saying is "you're only as old as you feel", so
I'm actually only 29!
2. How would you describe your personality?
I am a converted introvert! I went all through school as a very
shy person, sitting in the back of the classroom very rarely
talking. Speech was synonymous with terror. Yet in my 30's I
now look forward to speaking with and in front of people. I
have so many messages to share with the world, and so little
time to do it in.
3. How did you become interested in the Internet and when did
you first "go online"?
My husband and myself were techies from the beginning. We were
on Prodigy in the late 80's, and saw the value very early on.
We designed our first business website in 1994, and have never
looked back!
4. What businesses/websites do you currently operate on the
Internet?
We've actually been pulling back and reorganizing at the
moment. We have our first business, a high-end wedding
photography studio,
http://www.EyesOnPhotography.com
that is an online portfolio with over 6000 images. We have
http://www.BeingABride.com
where we sell our gift book created from our photography. We
have
http://www.BoomerangNetwork.com
that allows people to put ecards directly on to their website,
and have the ability to change photographs as often as they
wish. I have
http://www.VisionOfSuccess.com
where I provide mentoring information to small businesses. And
my newest venture is
http://www.SnapMonkey.com
in which we sell online website design for one low fee.
5. What inspired you or made you decide to start your current
online business/website?
When we started www.EyesOnPhotography.com online back in 1994,
I was so excited because I saw the power of the Internet. I saw
the ability to change your target market, and to provide
customer service at a totally new level. By 1998, we were no
longer working with just our local market. Instead, people
would find our portfolio online, call and chat with us online,
and fly us in to their location for their wedding. Most of our
clients are not from the Denver area, and we never meet face to
face until the wedding day. This broke all barriers on what we
could charge for our services, as locals no longer determined
our fee. We created our own market. Once we accomplished this
feat, others began to ask how we did it.
We created www.VisionOfSuccess.com as a way to find people to
mentor, and teach them the importance of business planning and
thinking outside the box.
www.SnapMonkey.com is an extension of wanting to help my
clients. I partnered up with a woman in the gift basket
industry who provides mentoring through several different
websites, and we were both wanting a simple solution to website
development that would start many businesses on the road to
success through the Internet.
6. What is one of the biggest mistakes and/or blunders you have
made while marketing online, and what did you learn from it?
Not jumping on ideas fast enough. Also, spreading myself too
thin, and not having the time to really work a great idea. It
all comes down to focus and follow through.
7. What percent of your income is made from online sales?
Whew, this is a hard one. Part of me wants to say 100% because
all of my clients have some contact with my websites.
www.SnapMonkey.com is definitely 100% because you must sign up
and pay directly online.
www.EyesOnPhotography.com and www.VisionOfSuccess.com are a
little harder to calculate because the higher ticket prices of
some of my services. I usually have multiple conversations with
people, via email, chats and phone conversations before they
make a purchase. All of our photographs are online after the
wedding for people to order directly online. I have several
books and articles online at www.VisionOfSuccess.com for
instant download. I would also say about 80% of my book orders
at www.BeingABride.com are placed directly online. And all of
our orders for www.BoomerangNetwork.com come from online.
8. What are your most successful means of advertising?
I think knowing my target market, and really focusing on them
has been my most successful approach. I always combine
traditional and Internet marketing. And because Internet
advertising is still relatively inexpensive, I have tried many
different methods. I love working with search engine
optimization and keyword techniques. Linking is an incredibly
effective method. I advertise on portals and gateways of
industry leader sites. Directories are a great place to be
listed. I also try and get articles and ads into any ezine
related to my target audience.
9. Do you have any advertising tips or secrets you would like
to share with our readers?
Just because you have an Internet business doesn't mean you
can't use traditional marketing to get traffic to your website.
I've worked with so many people that seem to have created two
distinct business models in their head: online and offline. And
often the two rarely cross in people's minds. One of the best
ways to get traffic online is to sell offline. There are
hundreds of magazines and business journals that might be a
perfect fit for you to work with and market with. Concentrate
on particular industries and niches, both online and offline,
and you will be successful!
10. What do you like most about being online?
I can work when I want! With three businesses with multiple
products and services, I put in quite a few hours a week, but
it's on my own time. I enjoy time with my daughter. I enjoy
several vacations a year. And I don't mind working until 12 or
1 in the morning because I'm passionate about what I'm doing. I
also enjoy meeting people from around the world. I have made
contacts and met people from every part of the world. Just
recently, I have been working with people in Canada, New
Zealand, Ireland, India and Scotland. Where else can you have
that kind of business!
11. What are your goals for 2003?
I am really growing www.VisionOfSuccess.com and
www.SnapMonkey.com.
In today's economy, I'm seeing more people venture out onto
their own. My goal is to help as many people as I can about the
power of creating a successful business with very defined
tools, and turning it into a successful life.
12. What advice would you give to someone trying to start their
own online business?
Learn all you can. Begin with a simple site, and change it
regularly. Watch your industry leaders to see how they are
using their websites. Browse through several new sites a week,
and discover new things to add to your site. The Internet is
such a new and changing technology, and its one that is so
exciting to be in on in the infancy. With an online business,
you can try new things all the time, and adjust just as fast.
Things are still so inexpensive, it's easy to try and test out
new ways of doing business.
