Interview With John Woodworth
By Elizabeth Sinclair

Greetings! My name is John Woodworth. I am a marketing
consultant, now 53, and have been disabled with a
neurological disorder for the last five years. The disease
came on me suddenly, and within two weeks from onset, I
was no longer able to go to the office and work on projects.
None of the doctors I saw had a clear idea about what was wrong,
but a few were blatant enough to suggest that I may have ALS or
Lou Gehrig's disease. A death sentence. As it turns out, it
wasn't ALS, but a disorder of the peripheral nervous system.
However, my mobility is restricted by about 80% and I am a
chronic pain patient, and it's permanent. Hey, better than
being dead. I play a musical instrument, the electronic horn,
and love to spend time playing tunes and pretending I am on
stage with Glenn Miller. (who?)

I am single, by traditional standards, but have a wonderful
domestic partner in Gigi, who is also disabled. We live in
Gold Beach, Oregon. Take a look-- http://goldbeach.org Truly,
a paradise.

I am a very outgoing and curious person, and someone who listens
well to others. I was also a psychiatric and vocational rehab
counselor in the past. At the same time, I am introspective, and
enjoy thinking and problem solving. But if a friend needs
something, I will drop what I am doing and help them. I guess I
have always been one of those people who help others. It seems
to make the world a better place.

My interest in the Internet originated in 1998, the year I became
disabled. I have taken no computer training, and have taught
myself all the mistakes I know today.

I have a 'plug-in-profit' website at
http://allianceforthedisabled.com
and am currently working to develop a bi-monthly newsletter
which will be published online only. Actually, I am going to
refer to my publication as a Mag-Net......a magazine published on
the Net. Well, it's as clever as 'ezine,' isn't it? The mag-net
is called the AFD Advocate, and will be published soon.

My inspiration to develop an online business was twofold. First,
I needed an income. The amount of money you receive from Social
Security as a disabled person is not enough to pay an average
home mortgage or apartment rental. Second, I wanted to help as
many people as I could to obtain the skills, determination, and
tools necessary to generate income from programs offered on the
Internet. There must be hundreds of thousands of people who are
disabled and want to work, injured workers who need re-training
for gainful employment, and those who are unemployed for whatever
reason. And after two years of research, I have found a number of
legitimate programs which can help. Thus, my mag-net.

I purchased a batch of 'opt-in' leads from a very reputable
company and plugged them into my Alliance For The Disabled
website. The site, itself, is good, and contains programs and
business opportunities from very successful marketers. As well,
the service associated with the website sent out professional
sales and motivational letters to my 'leads' for a 4 month period.
So, what happened? Not one sale! My mistake? Not following up
personally with these folks.....I saw them as 'leads' only, and
not people. I figured the website and the professional letters
were enough. As attractive of a business proposition it was,
please don't make the same mistake......if you have a list or
leads, you also have an autoresponder--use it! Send out regular
messages, and find out what is going on, and what else you can do
for these business opportunity seekers.

At this point, approximately one half of my income is derived
from Internet sales. I am projecting that, within another six
months, I will be able to free myself from the Social Security
System completely, even though I am totally disabled.

Advertising on the Internet is big business. Unfortunately, alot
of it is a complete waste of money. The problem is that it is too
easy to spend your money. Do some research first. I bought one of
those ad-submitters (2.5 million with one easy click, etc.)
Very little response. They submit your ad to FFA's and typically
your ad remains on the site for just a short time. How about
safelists? Used to be pretty successful. Now, just look at how
successful the e-mail 'dump' companies are. People advertise on
safelists because there are (usually) few spam complaints, but
they buy an email dump account and do not read your reciprocal
ad. They are too busy promoting their own program to read about
yours. However, a few stand out as being fairly responsive--
Herculist, for example.

Next, we have ezine advertising. Solo or top placed ads work
fairly well in reputable ezines, and there are quite a few.....
again, do some research---at this writing there are somewhere
between 300,000 and 400,000 ezines being published on the
Internet. If I were to advertise in an ezine, I would start with
LOGON NewZine. Good people and expansive circulation possibilities.

The absolute best way to effectively advertise is to have a
newsletter or ezine of your own, and recommend products and
services to your readers, once you have developed some rapport.

Another way of advertising is to use Forums. Now, most forums
don't allow you to just join, and jump in with a list of programs
you are advertising.....you need to develop some relationships
with folks who post regularly....they usually have products or services
they are representing, and you can use a resource box (a few lines
of who and what you are). Plenty of people use this venue. I
personally like Michael Green's HowToForum. You can also learn
alot from regularly reading Forums.

If I were not online, it would be difficult to imagine what my
life would be like. Of course, my situation isn't the norm. I
particularly like the personal and worldwide friends I have made.
It's a whole new world out there.

My goals for 2003 include launching my mag-net, and completing
several reviews I have been asked to do. (of course, I am already
looking forward to 2004)

My general advise for someone wanting to start an online business
is to due diligence. Conduct research on your product you want to
sell, or research companies for which you might wish to be an
affiliate. Educate yourself. Get some computer training. Talk to
anyone you know who has had experience doing business on the Net.
Subscribe to some business newsletters, and don't be afraid to
email people and ask questions. I was a real pest when I started.
(some people think I am STILL a pest). Above all, use your
common sense, and do not become overwhelmed with the glitter and
high-level promises you will see everywhere online.

But follow your dream and your heart, as we all have only one
life to live.

Best Wishes and Blessings to all,

John Woodworth
